Plastic Spill Pallets Made of Polyethylene – Safe and Reliable Hazardous Material Storage
Why use a plastic spill pallet?
Plastic spill pallets are essential for companies handling hazardous or water-polluting substances. They are designed to prevent leaks and spills from contaminating the environment and groundwater. MEILLER plastic spill pallets made of high-quality polyethylene (PE) are chemically resistant and corrosion-free, making them the ideal choice for storing aggressive or corrosive liquids such as acids, alkalis, and other chemical substances. Compared to steel or stainless-steel spill pallets, plastic spill pallets are often more cost-efficient and lighter, while still offering excellent durability.
Compliance and chemical resistance
When storing hazardous materials, strict legal requirements such as the German Water Resources Act (WHG) must be met. The law requires that all facilities handling water-polluting substances take precautions to prevent leaks. Plastic spill pallets are WHG-compliant and certified for the safe storage of hazardous liquids.
Polyethylene (PE) as a material offers outstanding resistance to a wide range of chemicals, which is why PE spill pallets are frequently used in laboratories, chemical plants, and industrial warehouses. They provide secure containment in case a container leaks, ensuring that no dangerous liquids enter the soil or water systems.
Determining the correct sump capacity
The required sump volume of a plastic spill pallet depends on the total storage volume and the largest single container. According to standard safety regulations, the spill pallet must be able to hold at least 10% of the total stored volume, or the entire volume of the largest container, whichever is greater. If the pallet is used in a water protection area, it must contain 100% of the total volume.
MEILLER plastic spill pallets are available in various sump capacities and dimensions, perfectly suited for drums, small containers, and IBCs.
Types of plastic spill pallets available
Our online shop offers a wide range of polyethylene spill pallets for different container types and storage applications:
- Small container spill pallets (up to 100 l sump volume): Compact spill pallets for small cans, bottles, and 60 l drums. Ideal for laboratories, workshops, and small-scale chemical storage. Available with or without feet and optional PE or galvanized steel grids.
- Plastic spill pallets for drums: Designed for 30 l, 60 l, and 205 l drums, MEILLER polyethylene spill pallets provide safe and compliant storage for up to 8 drums. Available models feature up to 1,200 l sump volume, with optional grid decks and forklift access for easy handling.
- Plastic spill pallets for IBC containers: Our heavy-duty polyethylene IBC spill pallets can hold up to two 1,000 l IBCs, offering a maximum sump capacity of 1,200 l. These spill pallets are extremely stable and can be optionally equipped with a filling stand or dispensing area for safe decanting operations.
- Mobile plastic spill pallets: For applications requiring frequent relocation within a facility, MEILLER offers mobile spill pallets made of PE. Equipped with rollers and a push handle, they allow for convenient manual transport. Suitable for up to two 205 l drums or smaller containers with a maximum sump capacity of 225 l.
- Floor elements and area protection systems: When large floor areas must be protected against leaks, polyethylene floor elements are the ideal solution. They can be modularly expanded, combined with ramps, and are strong enough to be driven over by forklifts. Perfect for creating custom spill containment zones for multiple drums, IBCs, or mixed container storage.
Practical handling and transport
Many MEILLER plastic spill pallets are designed for forklift and pallet truck handling, enabling safe and efficient internal transport. Their robust foot construction provides ground clearance, while versions without feet can be placed directly on the floor. Unlike steel pallets, polyethylene spill pallets are not susceptible to contact corrosion, allowing direct floor placement even on damp or chemically exposed surfaces.
Design and manufacturing quality
All MEILLER spill pallets made of polyethylene are manufactured to the highest industrial standards. Reinforced rib structures provide excellent stability, even under heavy loads. Both extruded and rotationally moulded PE designs are available, ensuring long-lasting performance and reliability. All models have general building authority approval (DIBt) and are compliant with WHG requirements for hazardous substance storage.

Choosing the right plastic spill pallet
Before purchasing, determine which hazardous materials you intend to store.
- Steel spill pallets are recommended for flammable liquids and oils.
- Plastic (PE) spill pallets are best for aggressive chemicals such as acids and alkalis.
- Stainless steel spill pallets combine corrosion resistance with high mechanical strength for special applications.
For each use case, MEILLER offers the right solution — from small container spill pallets to large IBC containment systems.
Case Study: Improved chemical safety with MEILLER plastic spill pallets
A medium-sized chemical manufacturer sought to improve its hazardous materials storage in compliance with WHG. The company replaced outdated steel spill pallets with polyethylene models from MEILLER. The new spill pallets provided greater chemical resistance, easier handling, and improved leak protection. The result: enhanced workplace safety, compliance with environmental regulations, and reduced maintenance costs.
Conclusion
MEILLER plastic spill pallets made of polyethylene combine safety, durability, and practicality for professional hazardous material storage. Whether for drums, IBCs, or small containers, our spill pallets ensure reliable containment and environmental protection in any industrial setting.
