Buying Guide: Legally Compliant Steel Spill Pallets Directly from the Manufacturer
When handling flammable liquids or water-hazardous substances in your operations, a spill pallet is indispensable. It serves as a vital storage system that ensures both environmental protection and occupational safety. In this buying guide, we highlight the key aspects of steel spill pallets. Regardless of whether your company operates in the chemical industry, mechanical engineering, agriculture, or workshops, MEILLER provides the right spill pallet to meet your needs.
What Is a Steel Spill Pallet?
A steel spill pallet must meet the requirements of the German Water Resources Act (WHG) and the Steel Spill Pallet Directive (StawaR) to be approved for the compliant storage of flammable liquids and water-hazardous substances. Compliance with StawaR requirements is indicated by the Ü mark, a conformity declaration certified by TÜV.
Steel spill pallets are available with either painted or galvanized surfaces. The suitable version depends on the stored medium. Our customer service team is happy to assist in choosing the right pallet. Detailed information can also be found in our chemical resistance list for spill pallets.

Drum Spill Pallets
Our online shop offers steel spill pallets designed for storing 60-liter to 220-liter drums. These pallets accommodate anywhere from 1 to 12 drums, depending on the design. Some pallets feature foot constructions for forklift access, while others can be used as pallet spill trays on Euro pallets. Options include flat or sloped designs for stackability.
New additions to our range include intermediate-size spill pallets for 3, 6, and 12 drums (200 liters each).

IBC Spill Pallets with 1,000-Liter or 600-Liter Capacity
For large-volume containers like IBCs, we offer steel IBC spill pallets with a 1,000-liter containment capacity. These pallets can hold 1, 2, or 3 IBCs. Variants include optional dispensing platforms and extended filling areas. New models now support 600-liter IBCs. The robust gratings can handle loads up to 1,000 kg/m², ensuring the safe storage of filled IBCs.
Mobile Steel Spill Pallets
For quick transport of drums or small containers, we provide mobile spill pallets equipped with push handles. These are available in sizes for 1 or 2 x 200-liter drums. New to our range are mobile spill pallets with conductive wheels and practical transport and drum safety features.
What Materials Can Be Stored on a Steel Spill Pallet?
Steel spill pallets allow the safe and compliant storage of water-hazardous substances and flammable liquids. Examples of substances that can be securely stored include:
- Gasoline
- Brake fluid
- Diesel
- Crude oil
- Ethanol
- Gear oil
- Heating oil
- Methanol
- Adhesives
- Acetone
For more information on hazardous substances that can be stored on a steel spill pallet, refer to our chemical resistance list.

Compliance Marking for Steel Spill Pallets
Why Is Proper Hazardous Material Storage Important?
Even children know: a single drop of oil can contaminate up to 1,000,000 liters of groundwater. Oil forms a film on the water’s surface, disrupting oxygen exchange and causing significant harm to ecosystems. Steel spill pallets securely capture leaks, preventing environmental disasters.
Leaking hazardous substances can also create slippery surfaces and toxic fumes, posing risks of workplace accidents and health hazards. Spill pallets reduce risks to employees and prevent costly incidents.
Legal Requirements for Storing Hazardous Materials on Spill Pallets
The German Water Resources Act (WHG) specifies the required volume of spill pallets to prevent hazardous substances from entering the environment during leaks. It mandates:
- Spill pallets must be liquid-tight and corrosion-resistant.
- Sufficient capacity must be provided (10% of total stored volume or 100% of the largest container).
- Regular maintenance and proper labeling are mandatory.
Compliance with the Steel Spill Pallet Directive (StawaR) includes requirements such as:
- Maximum height: 1,000 mm
- Maximum base area: 10 m² for single pallets
- Minimum material thickness: 3 mm
- Corrosion protection
- Compatibility with media per DIN 6601
- TÜV-certified conformity (Ü mark)

Determining the Necessary Containment Volume
To choose the right spill pallet, two criteria must be met:
- The spill pallet must hold at least 10% of the total stored volume.
- It must also accommodate the full capacity of the largest container.
In water protection areas, the pallet must hold 100% of the total stored volume.
