Steel spillage decking systems provide comprehensive protection for spaces storing flammable liquids (H224 – H226) and water-polluting substances (WGK 1–3). Individual decking elements can be combined to cover extensive areas, effectively safeguarding entire workshop rooms. Any spilled liquids are safely contained within the integrated sump of the decking system. This design also ensures maximum safety when transferring or dispensing hazardous materials.

Steel Spillage Decking: Buying Guide for Steel Area Protection Elements
Why is the use of floor sumps and spillage decking sensible?
Equipping rooms that handle hazardous materials with spillage decking achieves several crucial goals. The most apparent benefit: leaking liquids do not penetrate groundwater or harm the environment. It’s a widely known fact that a single drop of oil can contaminate up to 1,000,000 liters of groundwater, underscoring the environmental significance of such systems.
Moreover, spillage decking serves practical purposes: combining multiple elements creates a flexible storage area capable of withstanding the high load capacity of the grid grates, allowing forklift traffic. With convenient ramps, drums can easily be transported onto the decking using drum trolleys. Additionally, filling and transferring operations can be carried out directly on the decking.
Lastly, handling hazardous materials safely also enhances workplace safety. Leaking liquids pose risks, such as potential chemical reactions or slip hazards.
What steel spillage decking can I order from MEILLER?
We offer various steel spillage decking elements in two series, distinguished by their height: 80 mm or 110 mm. Decking elements of the same height can be combined.
The different spillage decking elements vary by dimensions. There are four variants:
- M-1 or M-11: W x D 1300 x 1300 mm
- M-2 or M-21: W x D 1900 x 1300 mm
- M-3 or M-31: W x D 2700 x 1300 mm
- M-4 or M-41: W x D 4000 x 1300 mm
The spillage decking elements are made from 3 mm thick galvanized steel sheets, compliant with StawaR. The load-bearing surface consists of high-load-capacity grates suitable for forklift traffic.
How can spillage decking elements be connected?
To join multiple decking elements—even of different sizes—various connectors are available as accessories in different lengths. For corner points, a cross connector is recommended, along with edge fasteners for the outer edges of the system.
To enhance accessibility and maneuverability with industrial trucks, drum trolleys, or forklifts, we also offer matching ramps and ramp corners.
What advantages do MEILLER steel spillage decking elements offer?
Steel spillage decking is ideal for protecting large areas, such as in workshops or highway maintenance depots. These elements offer the same benefits as standard steel sumps but with a much lower height, allowing for modular expansion. All applicable regulations, such as StawaR and WHG, must still be observed.
Unlike traditional floor sumps, spillage decking is easily traversable and allows for straightforward loading. Using drum supports and appropriate handling equipment, such as drum trolleys, facilitates simple drum storage.
What hazardous substances can be stored on steel spillage decking?
In general, flammable liquids and water-polluting substances can be stored on steel spillage decking. Examples include:
- Petrol
- Diesel
- Crude oil
- Heating oil
- Gear oil
- Brake fluid
How large should the containment volume of spillage decking be?
The required containment volume depends on the storage quantity and container types: in case of a leak, the decking must hold at least 10% of the stored quantity or the contents of the largest container. In water protection zones, the entire storage quantity must be contained.
